Pretend that you are talking to a blind man and have to describe for him what "red" is. You should use narrative and descriptive writing techniques, and try to appeal to his other senses!

A way in which I would describe the color "red" to a blind man would be by saying it is a color that seems to attract sadness.  The color red is usually gloomy, the color of blood, and the color that seems to represent sadness.  This color is also known for symbolizing sin, guilt, pain, passion, blood, and anger.  All of these things are symbloized red because they all seem to represent some type of sorrow, or some type of evil, or something unwanted.  Sin is a type of evil that is not wanted, which goes back to relating to the bible.  Guilt is also something that is not necessarily good because it is something most people feel after one knows that they were in the wrong.  Pain can be caused by so many different things, it can be physical or emotional pain.  Anger is another thing that the color red can represent because it is explained by many people that when one is angry their blood is boiling, which may or may not be true. But blood is red, where all of these things seem to have a relation in a way.

How does competition function in our society? To what extent is it healthy/unhealthy? Offer some real world examples taken from your life, community, culture, state, nation, or world.

Competition is a contest between individuals or groups. There seems to be competition in our society, such as sports, school, artists, music, etc.  There is competition between both team sports and individual sports.  Teams such as football, baseball, soccer, and many other sports include competition between all the teams that play.  Competition can be both healthy and unhealthy.  Healthy competition encourages everyone involved to push themselves harder than they would have without competition.  Unhealthy competition is when your reaction to others success is negative, rather than inspiring and motivating you.  A way in which I've seen competition is when there are new singers barely starting to become famous and older singers try harder for their old fans to continue to listen to them.  Another way competition is applied in my life are sport teams such as high school sports, there are many people that have friends at different schools within our district, yet we have to compete.  Competition is both a good and bad thing, it is much better when you are having fun and trying to do your best rather than being a grouch and always trying to be the best all the time, when one is always trying to be competetive and is a bad sport about everything those people seem to be classified as brats because they try to be everything they want and end up being bad sports in the end with a bad attitude.

How have you taken something that you have learned in the classroom and integrated it into your nonacademic life?

Something that I have learned and have applied to my nonacademic life would probably be communicating better with people such as using academic language when speaking with an adult or just holding better converstaions with peers. Using academic language around peers or family, or anybody is a good habit to pick up on, this habit will definitely help you in the future when needing to speak to a boss which is important, or when writing essays in the future for universities. Speaking better can also help you to pick up on a more professional way to communicate which will definitely help you, especially if the occupation you're interested involves people skills and attending to people. Another way using more precise language has helped and benefitted me is to communicate better with teachers, and I know this skill will greatly benefit me in my college years whether it's speaking to a professor of mine or applying academic language to assignments I will be expected to complete in the future. As I said before it will greatly benefit me with future occupations and communicating with other professionals.

If you could go back in time and be someone in history, who would you choose to be? Why?

If I had the opportunity to go back in time to an era in history, I would go back to Jesus time. I would choose to be someone who was not necesarilly important but just to witness everything throughout that period. The reason for wanting to go back to that time is to see why there are so many religions now if everyone were Jewish back then.  There are so many different religions to day that believe different things, I'm curious as to know why there are any other religion except or the Jewish religion, that was obviously the religion of the man that everybody believes to be the son of God and that majority of all the religions worship, then why would they have so many religions today, that some do not even recognize Jesus to have any importance? I think it would be really cool to go back and live in that period to see why there are religions that were invented throughout the years, especially to see why there are different beliefs and different things to practice throughout their religions.

If you had the responsibility to decide where $1 million should be spent to improve conditions somewhere in the world, what project(s) would you choose? Why?

If I had the opportunity to decide where one million dollars should be spent I would choose a place where there are many children in a city or county that are children that do not really have home to go to very night, or a hot meal to eat before they go to sleep. I would choose to make a facility where kids could be put in this place to be taken care of as far as given the necessities one needs to survive, as well as to provide them with an education to hopefully go on to be able to pick up on skills one needs to be capable to searching for a job and later being employed. It is getting harder and harder for people to make a living now a days and there are many kids that do not have families that care about them and are very smart, they just have no way to express how smart they are and are not being able to receive the type of education they deserve to go on in life to do bigger and better things for themselves. The type of facility I would choose for that money to be spent on would provide kids with a nice place to sleep, an education, and meals to be given to them. There are public schools, but not all kids don't necessarily have a nice place to go home to or parents that care, or a place where they are fed or being told to go to school or staying out of trouble or things like that. This facility would provide all of these things for kids such as providing them with the things they need and holding activities to keep them out of the streets and staying out of trouble.

How have you tried to effect change in relation to an issue of personal, local, or national significance?
A way in which I have tried to effect change in for my local community is trying to stop hunger of local AIDS patients in my community. I have tried to make change by delivering meals to local AIDS patients. The organization I volunteer with prepares hot meals, as well as putting together a bag of food that will last them two days until they will be delivered more food. I think what I do is really cool, I have fun while I'm making a change in my community.I think it is a really cool thing for everyone to be involved with, when one delivers food to the patients or clients, had they not given them their food they would not have the proper food or nutrients to keep them healthy for the next few days, especially those with a special diet they need to be on, they may purchase the wrong types of foods when buying their own food or may add a wrong ingredient when preparing food for themselves.I have made change in my community by allowing these people to receive the nutrients needed to stay as healthy as they can while they are ill. I think this is an awesome thing to do and a very cool thing to be involved with, as well as a very cool way to give back to their community.

If you could introduce one new idea or material thing to a primitive culture, what would it be?
Something new I would introduce to this primitive culture would be to allow only good music rather than having unwanted music artists as well as genres that are unwanted by many people. For example, I am assuming this culture would have its own place that all the people of this culture are from, so in the place that they originated from there would be no country music allowed, no electronic music, no classical, no heavy metal, and any other genre related to the other genres stated. As far as artists not being allowed, there would be no Lady Gaga, LMFAO, Justin Beiber, and any other major artists that would fall into the same category that these artists fit in to. I think it would be cool to have a place where there is only good music being played all the time, the artist that I would definitely choose to be played for this primitive culture would be Tupac, Notorious B.I.G, Drake, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Too Short, Travie McCoy, Plan B, Daddy Yankee, Rick James, Teena Marie, and any other major artists that have the same type of music as these artists. Introducing these artis to a primitive culture would maybe keep their ears to only like artists such as these or any artists that sound like them. I think that would be really cool where the people of this culture would only like music like that and hopefully be accustomed to listening to music like the genres above and hopefully not like the artists that I stated would not be allowed.

If you were to describe yourself using a quotation, what would that quotation be? After you have chosen a quote, then write a bit about how it relates to you and reveals what kind of person you are.

"Winners never quit and quitters never win."
I like this quote, it can relate to so many people including myself.this quote can relate to me because I am the type of person that likes to try new things, such as trying newer sports as I get older and doing bigger things in school as the years go by. I have been aging sports since I was 4 years of age. I started out playing soccer since inwas the age of four until the age of 10 or so. Throughout those years I played softball as well. I believe I continued to play softball until I entered middle school. I had not really participated in sports during middle school since I had gone from a change of being in private school to public school so I was still getting used to the new schooling system. My freshman year in high school I decided to play basketball to try it out and to see whether or not I would like to play the following year. I ended up playing but did not really like it. Later on my freshman year I decided to try out shotput and discus for track and field, I ended up liking that a lot. My following high school year, my sophomore year, I decided to play tennis, I ended up liking that sport and played my junior year as well. I am currently in my junior year and I just tried a new sport, waterpolo, so far I like it and hope to play next year as well. I think I can relate to this quote because although I have not necessarily one every one of my games in all the sports I have participated in but I have continued to participate in sports over the years. There are many people that try out a sport when they are little, not like it and give up and quit right then and there. I think I can relate to this quote, as well as many other athletes.

Given the authority to establish a holiday, what would you choose to commemorate? Why? What would the celebration look like?

If I were given the authority to commemorate a holiday I would choose to mandate National Music Day. This holiday would incorporate all the different genres of music out there. I think it would be nice for all the different genres of music to be introduced to everybody and to be recognized since music is such a big thing from all cultures and races. If this holiday were to be established there would be free concerts on this day, these concerts would be put on by well known bands, not the unknown nobody bands that play for free at parks, but people who are known and have big hits. The concerts would be put on at well known amphitheaters and parks that usually concerts are held already. If we actually had this holiday I think many more genres of music would be much more appreciated by many more people. I think that if this holiday were mandated it would be celebrated by many people around our nation and many artists would choose to perform for fans. Something that would be cool to involve in this holiday would be to have National Music Day, but to also have some type of charity involved with it where there will bedonations accepted to go to whatever type of organization is involved with. It would be really cool to maybe switch the charity year by year so that there could be money raised for different charities.

What is the best advice you've ever received? Explain.

The best advice I've ever received would probably be "Never give up." This advice is something that has stuck because ihave been told this by several people. This advice has been given in relation to different things such as in sports and school. I've been given this advice from different people like teachers, coaches, family, and friends. I've been told to never give up on school, to always do my best and not be like other kids messing up. I've been told to never give up in practice for sports, to keep pushing because in then end practice always pays off. This advice has always stuck to me, I've been in school since I was five years old, and in sports since I was four years old, and I have been told to never give up since I was a young kid. This is advice that will always stick to me and that I will later go on to give this advice to other people as well.

Ask and answer the one important question that a university won't ask you, but you wish they would.

A question I wish university would ask incoming students would be...
Q: What is an idea of your daily schedule, as well as an idea of what a Saturday/Sunday looks like.

I think this question would be a good question to ask students because it gives the university an idea of what kind of person the incoming students are, as well as showing if they are good students by seeing if they spend a lot of time on homework. Another thing this would show university would be if they use time wisely and spend enouGh time on studies. Seeing one's daily schedule/routine can reveal a lot about a person. If incoming students do not know what kind of things they need to do in order to have a valuable enough schedule for universities to consider I'm sure they will then start to begin to start using their time wisely, learn how to manage their time and begin to spend enough time on studies and enough time to have fun and relax. Older students can also inform younger siblings, friends, etc. that universities are interested in a view of their schedules/routines so they can get a head-start on how to manage their time as well as to spend enough time on studies and earning the grades they need to be earning.

Your life is a movie. Describe the first 15 minutes.

If there were a movie about my life, the first fifteen minutes would probably start out with me during my toddler years then showing me grow up until my current age, it would show the events that have occurred throughout my life such as being baptized, family parties that my family threw and events like that. I was born on September 1, 1995 at Sharp Hospital in Chula Vista, and when I was first taken home I was living in Imperial Beach at the time at my grandmother's house. Her house was a place my family would gather at on the weekends, also a place where most family parties were held. My family is a typical Catholic family that attends church very Sunday, my siblings and I were all forced to attend catechism and all that good stuff. I was baptized a few months after I was born at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Otay, Chula Vista. That church is the church that most of my family completed all of their sacraments. My dad completed most of his sacraments there, including getting married there, my grandfather's funeral was there, a few aunt's, uncle's, as well as cousin's have completed sacraments there, and my siblings and I completed our sacraments there. My family is a part of that church. Later in the movie they would probably show me on around my first birthday and would proceed to go on to my parents wedding. My parents were married by the court before I was born, but later went on to get married by the church when I was around the age between one and two years old. It would latergo on to show my 3rd birthday, and whatever family parties went on that time period and that would complete the first fifteen minutes of my life movie, maybe a bit more like 40, I would like these events to have been in detail.

Write a letter to your future college roommate introducing yourself and your background.

Hello,
My name is Briana Montijo, I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I attended elementary school, middle school, and high school in Chula vista. I'm a pretty chill person and easy to get along with. I love to hangout with my friends, as well as to spend time with my family. In addition to spending time with my loved ones I am into sports, I played tennis, waterpolo, basketball, threw shotput and discus in track and field in my high school years. I like to watch football as well as soccer. I am the oldest of three kids, I have one brother and one sister. I was raised by my dad, and my grandma and aunt have been the motherly figures for me since I was bout 9 years old to today still. Going to university has never been something to think about, it was just something that I had to do or else my family would pretty much disown me. I am interested in studying Social Work and looking forward to us being roommates.

Sincerely,
  Briana Montijo

Please describe your reactions/ideas to the following quote: "He does not possess wealth, it possesses him."

I think this quote means that people do not possess money, the money possesses them, in other words, the money gets the best out of them.  I could understand this quote as being compared to people who are arrogant. This quote can very well be applied to our society today, money gets the best out of people. Being wealthy can change someone completely because there are people that think money is the only thing that matters.  Money is something that is very important, more important to some than others.  This quote can also be expressed asone being selfish and inconsiderate because people who are usually arrogant usually are selfish and inconsiderate.  This quote can be directed to those who have money but are selfish with the money they have, such as people having money that do not contribute to things they can be contributing to such as charities or buildings or parks in their community.

What is the most valuable contribution you could make to a college campus? Explain.

One of the most valuable contributions one could give to a college campus would probably something useful one could use in class such as maybe donating laptops or an iPad, or something which fits into that category which could help college students to get things done like essays, or doing any type of research that is necessary.  I think laptops would be a very valuable contribution because I think it would be something very useful in college, you need internet access to do many things such as completing certain assignments assigned  by your professor or doing any type of research, completing papers that need to be done, and anything else that would need or involve a computer in order for whatever it is one is doing to complete what it is they have to do.  Computers are very useful sources when it comes to school, many assignments, in order to be completed, require finding information which may only be accessed through a computer.

Explain a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dillema you have faced and its impact on you.

Something big for me that I have attempted during my high school years is taking an AP English class. Taking an AP class was not something I personally wanted to do, but was something my dad wanted me to do. In the beginnig I was really scared and nervous on how I would do in the class. In the beginning I struggled a lot, it was pretty difficult, being timed to write I essays which is something I am not used to doing. It is now around the 4th month of school and I seem to be getting more comfortable with the work being given in the class and I am noticing I am getting stronger in my writing skills and just doing better overall. I am glad my dad pushed me to be in an AP class because I am seeing that I am learning techniques I will need in order to be successful in college. I have learned new things such as different types of essays, many new vocabulary words, and just being a better writer overall. Being put in an AP class is something that will help me a lot in the future.

Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

An issue that is important to me that can be something that goes on everywhere which is people not being involved in their community. Community service is something that I have been involved with since I was a little kid, my family and I participate in mainly one organization which involve delivering meals to those who are too sick and need assistance on getting food to them.  My family and I have also participated in a few walks which raise money for finding a cure for AIDS.  I was brought up always doing community service and always being told that if i don't give back to my community I really don't have a purpose for doing anything.  I think it is very important for people to participate in things that involve giving back to their communities whether it's cleaning up parks or beaches, or going to the extent of doing the 3-day walk to find a cure for breast cancer. There are many poeple that do not participate in activities which serve back to their community, it's very important that people begin to. It is required at many schools that you do a certain amount of community service hours in order to graduate.  Giving back to your community is very important and I do believe that is an issue that not everybody recognizes.

If you could choose two things to change about our high school campus, what would they be and why?

If I were given the option of changing two things at Castle Park High School, I would choose to change the students we have now to students that actually HAVE pride in the school they attend. Another thing I would choose to change is to instead of having grades, to have a "Pass/Fail" type of a system.  The reason in which I would choose to change people at our school to people who actually take pride in the school in which they attend is because it seems as though the people I go to school with go to school and then just go home, it's nothing special to them, it;s a place they are forced to go to because their parents make them.  Many of the students that attend Castle Park say that the school is ghetto, which I think if they are calling our school ghetto they have not seen the ghetto because our school is quite luxurious compared to schools that are actually ghetto. So it would be really nicd to have people that are proud to attend the school they attend, go to school functions with school spirit and the rest of all that good stuff that goes along with having pride! The reason for why I would prefer a "Pass/Fail" system rather than actually receiving grades is because it is a lot harder trying to aim for that letter grade that in the end really means nothing. It would be a lot easier for people who are trying in school and rather than focusing on getting that grade up to actually focus on understanding the material of that class you are trying to get information out of.

Should school attendance be mandatory?  In your answer, be sure to explore what the function of education is, and what our nation would look like if the masses were less educated.

I believe that school attendance should not be mandatory in high school, there are plenty of students that are forced to be at school that obviously do not want to be there. Everyone should have the right to choose whether or not they do want to attend school. I believe that school attendance should be mandatory from elementary school up until the time you are in the 8th grade so that way everybody at least goes on in life to understand the basics in each subject and is not resulting in a society full of uneducated people.  If attendance was required from grade 1 up until grade 8, and gave everybody the choice to either go on to more schooling after that, or the option of just starting their life from there and be given the choice to find a job it would allow those who are serious of having a good life and being successful to actually concentrate in school and not have the same people who tend to be the disruptions in class that take the learning time away from those who are actually interested in learning.  Also, those who do not want to be at school no longer would be, those people would be off doing whatever it is they want to do.  I think this would be a pretty cool thing for people to try out in the future and if does not work, just keep requiring that everyone attends school.

If you had the ability to talk to one species of animal, which animal would you choose to communicate with? Why?

If I had the ability to talk to a species of animals, I would choose to be able to communicate with a shark. Sharks to me seem really cool. The types of things I would ask a shark would be things such as why they tend to attack people, if they enjoy living in water, and what do they eat besides people.  I would like to know if sharks have a reasonable answer for why they attack people, and later try to eat them.  Next, I would ask if they enjoy living in water. I think asking them if they enjoy living in water is a cool question because personally if I were able to survive under water I would choose to live in the ocean just because I enjoy being in water, so I would like the opinion of a water animal if they would choose to live on land if they were able to survive without being in water. Another question I would ask is what it is they survive off of to eat. I would like to know if sharks attack humans, then eat them? Or if they eat other animals in water or what else it is they eat in order to survive a healthy rest of their lives.  I think asking a shark these questions would be pretty cool questions to ask, afterall they are a few things I am curious about.
